Background of the Study
Job satisfaction and family life balance are essential aspects of overall well-being, particularly for healthcare workers such as nurses, who often face demanding work schedules. Nursing is a profession characterized by long hours, shift work, and emotional labor, all of which can impact job satisfaction and the ability to balance professional and personal responsibilities (Olawale & Yusuf, 2023). Maintaining a balance between work and family life is crucial, as excessive work demands can lead to stress, burnout, and decreased job performance.
In Borno State, nurses play a vital role in delivering healthcare services, particularly given the challenges posed by limited medical resources and insecurity in the region. However, due to irregular work schedules, night shifts, and emergency responsibilities, many nurses struggle to balance their jobs with their family responsibilities. Studies have shown that work-life conflict among healthcare workers can lead to reduced job satisfaction, increased turnover rates, and psychological distress (Abubakar & Musa, 2024).
While some organizations attempt to implement flexible scheduling and support programs to enhance work-life balance, their effectiveness remains uncertain. Understanding the relationship between job satisfaction and family life balance among nurses in Borno State will help healthcare institutions develop policies that improve employee well-being and productivity. This study seeks to assess the factors affecting job satisfaction and family life balance among nurses in the state and propose strategies for improvement.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses in Borno State face numerous challenges, including long working hours, understaffing, and demanding patient care responsibilities. These factors contribute to work-life conflict, making it difficult for nurses to maintain a balance between their jobs and family obligations. Poor work-life balance can lead to increased stress, job dissatisfaction, and burnout, ultimately affecting the quality of healthcare services provided.
Despite the importance of job satisfaction and family life balance, there is limited research on how nurses in Borno State manage these challenges and the extent to which their work affects their personal lives. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the relationship between job satisfaction and family life balance among nurses, identifying the key factors influencing these aspects, and providing recommendations for improving work-life balance in the nursing profession.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of job satisfaction among nurses in Borno State.
2. To examine the impact of work schedules on family life balance among nurses.
3. To identify strategies for improving job satisfaction and work-life balance in the nursing profession.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of job satisfaction among nurses in Borno State?
2. How do work schedules affect family life balance among nurses?
3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance job satisfaction and family life balance for nurses?
